Most of us have extra weight that we just can’t get rid of. It seems no matter how hard we try, it just won’t leave. A simple solution for us could be walking. The beauty of walking is that it can be done anywhere, at any time, at our own, individual ability. We can start off slow if we want and work ourselves into stronger walkers, or we can start at a faster pace and increase that as well! It can be done in our own homes on a treadmill, in our neighborhoods, or at a gym. It is truly the most versatile exercise out there, and is very forgiving, since we can go at our own pace.
Why walking, how will that help my overall health? Harvard Health explains that Dr. Thomas Frieden, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention coins it best, (walking is) “the closest thing we have to a wonder drug”.
When we walk at a brisk pace, we are raising our heart rate and our blood flow will increase. Our heart is becoming considerably stronger and healthier, as we will become stronger and healthier.
Our muscles and skin tone will thank us as we will firm up those less-than-flattering bulges. The great thing about walking is that it engages almost all of our muscles.
When we walk we feel better about ourselves. We know we took the time to do something to improve ourselves and our overall health. As cardio helps our heart, and tone skin and muscles it helps other parts of our body. We know we are going in the right direction and that will give us an increase in our self-confidence and self-esteem.
When we exercise we release endorphins. Endorphins will reduce stress and pain and will give us a greater sense of calmness and accomplishment.
Being outside gives us a chance to clear our heads, let our lungs receive fresh air and see outside of our inner lives through the world and nature. In an article I read from Advanced Neurotherapy, they explain that “So many people are working inside a building all day, getting stressed out by a variety of factors in their work place. Going outside can help reduce this stress. Scientists have discovered physiological evidence that suggests spending time in nature reduces stress, such as observed lower heart rates and less time spent thinking about problems and/or insecurities. Furthermore, taking a walk outside will help the brain produce endorphins, which are neurotransmitters responsible for regulating mood. Both being outside and walking can work together to create positive changes in overall state of mind.” It is incredible what will happen to our bodies and our mind by just walking. I often remind myself of Newton’s First Law of Motion, a body in motion stays in motion, and a body at rest stays at rest.
Remember though, to make sure you have a comfortable pair of walking shoes, and eat something high in protein before you begin, it will make all the difference of comfort and allow you to go a greater distance.
Walking will allow us to make a big change in our lives, and perhaps will positively influence those around us, and help them improve their lives.
